THE WAAGMEESTER FAMILY STORY
The Waagmeester family has a rich heritage in US shipping – as these old photographs show. The people pictured here are grandparents, uncles and aunts of the Waagmeester brothers. The picture on the Home Page is an old photo of Alvina and the schooner in the upper left corner is her sister ship the Irena. These family snapshots were taken between 1910 and 1925.
Below on the left is a picture of the “family crew”on the deck of the Alvina when it is obviously rigged for work. Hauling timber along the Pacific Northwest coastline made up much of the trade for the Alvina. However, there were trips in the Captain’s log as far away as the Hawaiian Islands. In the middle is a picture of old Uncle Abe Waagmeester (Dale & Steve’s great uncle) enjoying the deck and posing with family on calm seas. The two young rigging maidens posing on the boom in the far right photo are their mother and an aunt. Whatever the occasion for this trip, the ship was hard under sail most of the time.
It might be a stretch for us to use a heritage of several generations and nearly a century of history to imply that Waagmeester Awnings & Sun Shades is the best company to do business with, but we just thought you might like to know who we are, where we come from and what a “Waagmeester” is… and that we come from good stock.
